Narrative:

I called approach to advise of a VFR aircraft I was trying to hand off to them; and they asked if I could accept more coordination. They said aircraft X was at 8;000 feet direct to a fix and my control into ZZZ. I said roger and we got off the line. I realized when I went to clear them for the approach that they were entering a 9;000 foot minimum IFR altitude and I cleared them for the approach. If approach is going to hand off aircraft at 8;000 feet they should clear them for the approach before giving them to us. I should have told them to clear them or climb them in order to accept the hand off and then subsequently clear them for the approach.
