Narrative:
Air carrier X during climb out of bwi tower got busy and forgot to give us a turn. As we were taking off behind a slower aircraft, we got a little too close in my opinion and I ordered the copilot to turn 30 degrees right and climb 500'. The tower was advised of our action as soon as the frequency was available, and we were able to steer well clear of the traffic.
