Narrative:
Cleared by myr approach to descend to 2000', then advised of traffic (mlt) already at 2000'. He was northbound, we were eastbound. By the time I asked for clarification and had our rate of descent slowed, we were told to level at 3000' (we had already descended through 2500'). We immediately climbed back to 3000'. Controller advised traffic 1 mi. We think the 2 aircraft had under 500' and 1 mi sep. The other pilot said he saw us, we never saw him. Discussion with tower supervisor after landing resulted in pulling the tapes and relieving the controller for review.
