On takeoff roll; set standard power and after power set at approximately 50 knots; we heard 3 loud bangs; aircraft yawed sharply to the left. Performed reject at 50 kts. Fire rescue inspected tires and found no tire damage. Taxi back to gate. Engine compressor stall suspected.
