Narrative:
At about 2600' climbing out of ewr on the ewr 3 departure, we heard a loud bank. We checked the engine INS and there was nothing abnormal for about 3-5 seconds. Then engine #2 N2 would quickly to 0. There were no engine fail lights, but other engine 2 INS were somewhat abnormal. This coupled with the loud bang led me to believe that an engine failure or fire was a strong possibility. I therefore decided to shut down engine #2 and return to ewr. We declared an emergency and requested radar vectors back for a landing on runway 22. I gave the aircraft ot the first officer and accomplished the engine failure checklist with the F/east. We then did the other appropriate checklists and I resumed flying the aircraft. There were no other abnormal indications. We came around and made a normal 2 engine approach and landing. We were overweight (164000#). As we rolled off the runway, the fire trucks/emergency vehs notified us that parts of #2 engine were missing and we had damage to the horizontal stabilizer. We had them check for smoke/fire, and finding none, we continued to the gate to deplane the passenger west/O further incident.

Title: ENGINE FAILURE ON DEP CAUSES ACR LGT TO RETURN LAND AFTER INFLT ENGINE SHUTDOWN.
Narrative: AT ABOUT 2600' CLBING OUT OF EWR ON THE EWR 3 DEP, WE HEARD A LOUD BANK. WE CHKED THE ENG INS AND THERE WAS NOTHING ABNORMAL FOR ABOUT 3-5 SECS. THEN ENG #2 N2 WOULD QUICKLY TO 0. THERE WERE NO ENG FAIL LIGHTS, BUT OTHER ENG 2 INS WERE SOMEWHAT ABNORMAL. THIS COUPLED WITH THE LOUD BANG LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT AN ENG FAILURE OR FIRE WAS A STRONG POSSIBILITY. I THEREFORE DECIDED TO SHUT DOWN ENG #2 AND RETURN TO EWR. WE DECLARED AN EMER AND REQUESTED RADAR VECTORS BACK FOR A LNDG ON RWY 22. I GAVE THE ACFT OT THE F/O AND ACCOMPLISHED THE ENG FAILURE CHKLIST WITH THE F/E. WE THEN DID THE OTHER APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS AND I RESUMED FLYING THE ACFT. THERE WERE NO OTHER ABNORMAL INDICATIONS.
