Narrative:
During approach to lax we were advised 'to expect to contact tower at the outer (romeo) stay with me' by approach controller. This and similar phrasing is often used by lax approach. In this case the approach controller was very busy and we 'monitored' all the way to T/D on runway 24R. I noticed that we had not switched to tower as I was turning off the runway. I contacted the tower 'holding short of runway 24L.' the tower welcomed us to los angeles. I've landed at lax thousands of times and this is the first west/O clearance. The first officer said that he has already complained to the tower/approach control via letter about this procedure since no definite release by approach tends to promote a 'no tower contact' situation. Of course it would help if I had maintained 'situational awareness' during the approach. The landing was quite good, however.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF MLG LANDED LAX WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: DURING APCH TO LAX WE WERE ADVISED 'TO EXPECT TO CONTACT TWR AT THE OUTER (ROMEO) STAY WITH ME' BY APCH CTLR. THIS AND SIMILAR PHRASING IS OFTEN USED BY LAX APCH. IN THIS CASE THE APCH CTLR WAS VERY BUSY AND WE 'MONITORED' ALL THE WAY TO T/D ON RWY 24R. I NOTICED THAT WE HAD NOT SWITCHED TO TWR AS I WAS TURNING OFF THE RWY. I CONTACTED THE TWR 'HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 24L.' THE TWR WELCOMED US TO LOS ANGELES. I'VE LANDED AT LAX THOUSANDS OF TIMES AND THIS IS THE FIRST W/O CLRNC. THE F/O SAID THAT HE HAS ALREADY COMPLAINED TO THE TWR/APCH CTL VIA LETTER ABOUT THIS PROC SINCE NO DEFINITE RELEASE BY APCH TENDS TO PROMOTE A 'NO TWR CONTACT' SITUATION. OF COURSE IT WOULD HELP IF I HAD MAINTAINED 'SITUATIONAL AWARENESS' DURING THE APCH. THE LNDG WAS QUITE GOOD, HOWEVER.
