Narrative:

I had just landed on runway 33R at islip-mcarthur airport. I was instructed to taxi and hold short of runway 33L. As I approached an intersection, I noted that there were no signs at the intersection identing runway 33L, nor were there any 'hold short' lines on the taxiway. I had just passed another taxiway which also had no markings. I was barely able to stop short of entering upon runway 33L, which was an active runway at the time. However, I did stop short since I had been taxiing slowly and was looking for identing signs. I strongly feel that an airport as active as islip should have runways idented at all intxns and that controllers should use greater care in issuing taxi instructions. Had I actually entered upon the active runway a possible accident could have occurred. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Called reporter to find out what taxiway he turned off the runway on. There is only one way to turn off. Taxiway east, or go to the end of the runway and turn left. The reporter thinks he went to the end of the runway and taxied swbnd on runway 24. He said the other taxiway that he passed up was between runway 33R and runway 33L. There is no taxiway indicated on the airport diagram. He stated that much of the airport is concrete, so analyst thinks it may be an old taxiway no longer used. Callback conversation tower supervisor revealed the following information. There is an old taxiway between runways 33R and 33L however, it is notamed closed and is barricaded. There are runway identify signs on runway 24 for runway 33L.

Title: POTENTIAL RWY INCURSION.

Narrative: I HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 33R AT ISLIP-MCARTHUR ARPT. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33L. AS I APCHED AN INTXN, I NOTED THAT THERE WERE NO SIGNS AT THE INTXN IDENTING RWY 33L, NOR WERE THERE ANY 'HOLD SHORT' LINES ON THE TXWY. I HAD JUST PASSED ANOTHER TXWY WHICH ALSO HAD NO MARKINGS. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO STOP SHORT OF ENTERING UPON RWY 33L, WHICH WAS AN ACTIVE RWY AT THE TIME. HOWEVER, I DID STOP SHORT SINCE I HAD BEEN TAXIING SLOWLY AND WAS LOOKING FOR IDENTING SIGNS. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT AN ARPT AS ACTIVE AS ISLIP SHOULD HAVE RWYS IDENTED AT ALL INTXNS AND THAT CTLRS SHOULD USE GREATER CARE IN ISSUING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. HAD I ACTUALLY ENTERED UPON THE ACTIVE RWY A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. CALLED RPTR TO FIND OUT WHAT TXWY HE TURNED OFF THE RWY ON. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO TURN OFF. TXWY E, OR GO TO THE END OF THE RWY AND TURN L. THE RPTR THINKS HE WENT TO THE END OF THE RWY AND TAXIED SWBND ON RWY 24. HE SAID THE OTHER TXWY THAT HE PASSED UP WAS BTWN RWY 33R AND RWY 33L. THERE IS NO TXWY INDICATED ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM. HE STATED THAT MUCH OF THE ARPT IS CONCRETE, SO ANALYST THINKS IT MAY BE AN OLD TXWY NO LONGER USED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION TWR SUPVR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. THERE IS AN OLD TXWY BTWN RWYS 33R AND 33L HOWEVER, IT IS NOTAMED CLOSED AND IS BARRICADED. THERE ARE RWY IDENT SIGNS ON RWY 24 FOR RWY 33L.
