Narrative:
Air carrier X was at 8000' 5 southwest of ord. He stated his TCAS showed traffic at 3 mi opp direction, same altitude. Controller advised pilot there was no traffic. Pilot questioned the controller's advisory. The controller then advised the pilot his closest traffic 10 O'clock, 10 mi at 7000'. No further incident.

Title: TCASII FALSE TARGET INDICATION.
Narrative: ACR X WAS AT 8000' 5 SW OF ORD. HE STATED HIS TCAS SHOWED TFC AT 3 MI OPP DIRECTION, SAME ALT. CTLR ADVISED PLT THERE WAS NO TFC. PLT QUESTIONED THE CTLR'S ADVISORY. THE CTLR THEN ADVISED THE PLT HIS CLOSEST TFC 10 O'CLOCK, 10 MI AT 7000'. NO FURTHER INCIDENT.
