Narrative:
Snow removed from runway prior to departure. Flew roundtrip to portland, me. Wind out of the south. Flew standard pattern for runway 19. Snow removal in progress. No tracks on runway which appeared like undisturbed snow between a runway and a parallel taxiway. Snow removal equipment had been removing snow away from runway (both sides). It appeared that snow removal equipment was on the runway. We went around and had company check with snow removal equipment. We made a second approach and landed on what we thought was the runway with tracks on it. At about 40 KTS, we realized the nice landing was on the turf beside the runway. We taxied to the gate and several passenger commented on the nice landing. As it turned out, we discovered upon takeoff that the runway was much rougher due to packing and rutting. 'B' was the runway, but appeared as the undisturbed snow between taxiway a and runway. 'C' was the turf. The snow was removed about 75'. 'A' appeared as the parallel taxiway. 'C' appeared as the runway. Note: the snowblower was at the far end (south) of the airport.
