Narrative:

I was practicing stop and go's to get familiar with the aircraft. I was scheduled to get an instrument chkout the next day. Upon landing, for the fourth and final time, the aircraft began to veer to the left. I tried to bring it back with rudder only, but nothing happened. I then initiated a go around which further caused the aircraft to veer left. I departed the left side of the runway. The aircraft turned left, then hit some sand and caused the weight to shift and caused the right wing to contact the ground. I shut down the engine, uprighted the aircraft and taxied it back to the hangar. I feel that I made the go around decision too late to be effective. I was apprehensive on using brakes for fear of a propeller strike. I was anxious and excited to fly this new club aircraft. The owner of the aircraft gave me a thorough chkout, but he was not a CFI. I should have gotten together with a CFI and not been in a hurry to get experience. I have flown 5 hours in tailwheel aircraft, but have not had any problems. I felt comfortable in the aircraft, but that may have been due to inexperienced with taildragger aircraft. I should have corrected the left turn sooner and/or initiated a go around sooner. I also should have gotten more instruction in the taildragger-type aircraft. I feel that I may have been overly enthusiastic about trying out this aircraft. The right wingtip and right side of the horizontal stabilizer will need repair as will my ego. I hope this report will help someone else not to make the same type of mistake in the future.

Title: PRACTICE STOP AND GO'S WITH TAIL DRAGGER ACFT. LOSS OF CTL, GND LOOP.

Narrative: I WAS PRACTICING STOP AND GO'S TO GET FAMILIAR WITH THE ACFT. I WAS SCHEDULED TO GET AN INSTR CHKOUT THE NEXT DAY. UPON LNDG, FOR THE FOURTH AND FINAL TIME, THE ACFT BEGAN TO VEER TO THE LEFT. I TRIED TO BRING IT BACK WITH RUDDER ONLY, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. I THEN INITIATED A GAR WHICH FURTHER CAUSED THE ACFT TO VEER LEFT. I DEPARTED THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RWY. THE ACFT TURNED LEFT, THEN HIT SOME SAND AND CAUSED THE WT TO SHIFT AND CAUSED THE RIGHT WING TO CONTACT THE GND. I SHUT DOWN THE ENG, UPRIGHTED THE ACFT AND TAXIED IT BACK TO THE HANGAR. I FEEL THAT I MADE THE GAR DECISION TOO LATE TO BE EFFECTIVE. I WAS APPREHENSIVE ON USING BRAKES FOR FEAR OF A PROP STRIKE. I WAS ANXIOUS AND EXCITED TO FLY THIS NEW CLUB ACFT. THE OWNER OF THE ACFT GAVE ME A THOROUGH CHKOUT, BUT HE WAS NOT A CFI. I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN TOGETHER WITH A CFI AND NOT BEEN IN A HURRY TO GET EXPERIENCE. I HAVE FLOWN 5 HRS IN TAILWHEEL ACFT, BUT HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBS. I FELT COMFORTABLE IN THE ACFT, BUT THAT MAY HAVE BEEN DUE TO INEXPERIENCED WITH TAILDRAGGER ACFT. I SHOULD HAVE CORRECTED THE LEFT TURN SOONER AND/OR INITIATED A GAR SOONER. I ALSO SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN MORE INSTRUCTION IN THE TAILDRAGGER-TYPE ACFT. I FEEL THAT I MAY HAVE BEEN OVERLY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT TRYING OUT THIS ACFT. THE RIGHT WINGTIP AND RIGHT SIDE OF THE HORIZ STABILIZER WILL NEED REPAIR AS WILL MY EGO. I HOPE THIS RPT WILL HELP SOMEONE ELSE NOT TO MAKE THE SAME TYPE OF MISTAKE IN THE FUTURE.
