Narrative:
In cruise flight on our IFR flight plan direct to the osi VOR at 6000 ft MSL (flight mry-sfo), the first officer, who was PF at the time, pointed out traffic at 1 moving to 2 O'clock exactly at our altitude. The traffic was so close, it passed before we could take evasive action. Traffic appeared to be on a west heading. Aircraft was a high wing taildragger type, white with red stripes. I asked bay approach if there was any traffic in my vicinity and was told no, 'no traffic observed.' I said that I wanted to file a near midair collision report and was told to do so after landing. First officer said traffic was not visible to him as it was hidden behind the windshield post which on the small transport is rather wide. I was head down copying sfo arrival ATIS.

Narrative: IN CRUISE FLT ON OUR IFR FLT PLAN DIRECT TO THE OSI VOR AT 6000 FT MSL (FLT MRY-SFO), THE FO, WHO WAS PF AT THE TIME, POINTED OUT TFC AT 1 MOVING TO 2 O'CLOCK EXACTLY AT OUR ALT. THE TFC WAS SO CLOSE, IT PASSED BEFORE WE COULD TAKE EVASIVE ACTION. TFC APPEARED TO BE ON A W HDG. ACFT WAS A HIGH WING TAILDRAGGER TYPE, WHITE WITH RED STRIPES. I ASKED BAY APCH IF THERE WAS ANY TFC IN MY VICINITY AND WAS TOLD NO, 'NO TFC OBSERVED.' I SAID THAT I WANTED TO FILE A NMAC RPT AND WAS TOLD TO DO SO AFTER LNDG. FO SAID TFC WAS NOT VISIBLE TO HIM AS IT WAS HIDDEN BEHIND THE WINDSHIELD POST WHICH ON THE SMT IS RATHER WIDE. I WAS HEAD DOWN COPYING SFO ARR ATIS.
