Narrative:
Landed aircraft in bay west of cape pierce on south side of land mass. WX was quite good except for local strong north winds 20-25 KTS outside of bay. Cape newenham winds (awk) had been out of the north at approximately 6 KTS. While on water with flaps retracted and engine shut off, a strong gust of wind form the west (left side) struck the aircraft. The left wing lifted, causing aircraft to roll over in the water to the right. Reporter exited aircraft through window and stayed dry by climbing on top of floats as aircraft continued to roll over. Supply boat which was to pick up cargo going from the aircraft to the ship instead picked up pilot and aided with the initial salvage efforts. While aircraft was undamaged at time of being blown over, other than sale water effects, it was subsequently damaged during various phases of the salvage operation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA FRT ACFT IS BLOWN OVER WAITING ON THE WATER IN A BAY FOR THE CARGO TO BE PICKED UP.
Narrative: LANDED ACFT IN BAY W OF CAPE PIERCE ON S SIDE OF LAND MASS. WX WAS QUITE GOOD EXCEPT FOR LCL STRONG N WINDS 20-25 KTS OUTSIDE OF BAY. CAPE NEWENHAM WINDS (AWK) HAD BEEN OUT OF THE N AT APPROX 6 KTS. WHILE ON WATER WITH FLAPS RETRACTED AND ENG SHUT OFF, A STRONG GUST OF WIND FORM THE W (LEFT SIDE) STRUCK THE ACFT. THE LEFT WING LIFTED, CAUSING ACFT TO ROLL OVER IN THE WATER TO THE RIGHT. RPTR EXITED ACFT THROUGH WINDOW AND STAYED DRY BY CLBING ON TOP OF FLOATS AS ACFT CONTINUED TO ROLL OVER. SUPPLY BOAT WHICH WAS TO PICK UP CARGO GOING FROM THE ACFT TO THE SHIP INSTEAD PICKED UP PLT AND AIDED WITH THE INITIAL SALVAGE EFFORTS. WHILE ACFT WAS UNDAMAGED AT TIME OF BEING BLOWN OVER, OTHER THAN SALE WATER EFFECTS, IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DAMAGED DURING VARIOUS PHASES OF THE SALVAGE OPERATION.
