Narrative:
I was the captain on air carrier flight inbound to tulsa. We were talking to tulsa approach and inbound to tulsa VOR at 3000 ft heading almost due west. The approach controller asked us to report the airport in sight which we did at 5 mi. He then cleared us for a visual approach. We turned downwind for a visual approach to 17L. We tuned in the outer compass locator and were turning crosswind inside the locator at about 2600 ft when a supervisor came on and said we weren't cleared to 'widen out' like that. He gave us vectors behind 2 fgts inbound for the overhead pattern. Unless he wanted us to land on a runway 7000 ft wide and 150 ft long we had to 'widen out' exactly as we did. We were turning inside the marker which the approach chart shows as 5 NM from touchdown. We are limited to 200 KTS in the control zone. The fgts were much faster. My copilot had less than 100 hours in the aircraft and we were not informed of any other traffic. I feel the controllers were blaming us for their control shortcomings.

Title: ACR MLG ACCUSED OF DEVIATING FROM A DIRECT TRACK TO THE ARPT AFTER BEING CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH.
Narrative: I WAS THE CAPT ON ACR FLT INBOUND TO TULSA. WE WERE TALKING TO TULSA APCH AND INBOUND TO TULSA VOR AT 3000 FT HDG ALMOST DUE W. THE APCH CTLR ASKED US TO RPT THE ARPT IN SIGHT WHICH WE DID AT 5 MI. HE THEN CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH. WE TURNED DOWNWIND FOR A VISUAL APCH TO 17L. WE TUNED IN THE OUTER COMPASS LOCATOR AND WERE TURNING XWIND INSIDE THE LOCATOR AT ABOUT 2600 FT WHEN A SUPVR CAME ON AND SAID WE WEREN'T CLRED TO 'WIDEN OUT' LIKE THAT. HE GAVE US VECTORS BEHIND 2 FGTS INBOUND FOR THE OVERHEAD PATTERN. UNLESS HE WANTED US TO LAND ON A RWY 7000 FT WIDE AND 150 FT LONG WE HAD TO 'WIDEN OUT' EXACTLY AS WE DID. WE WERE TURNING INSIDE THE MARKER WHICH THE APCH CHART SHOWS AS 5 NM FROM TOUCHDOWN. WE ARE LIMITED TO 200 KTS IN THE CTL ZONE. THE FGTS WERE MUCH FASTER. MY COPLT HAD LESS THAN 100 HRS IN THE ACFT AND WE WERE NOT INFORMED OF ANY OTHER TFC. I FEEL THE CTLRS WERE BLAMING US FOR THEIR CTL SHORTCOMINGS.
