Narrative:
On final approach into lax 25R at dusk, a widebody transport Y holding on taxiway 8 facing south was narrowly missed by our left wing tip (widebody transport X) due to tip of widebody transport Y just barely clear of left side of our runway. Visual approachs were being conducted to all 4 runways, but we couldn't see our runway until about 3 mi out. We were following a widebody transport Z on ILS visual to 25L about 1 mi in front of us. The widebody transport Y wasn't noticed until we were about over the approach end due to low visibility. I lifted our left wing and held about 100 ft altitude above ground until past the widebody transport and then landed normally. It was our conclusion that had I continued on centerline to a normal touchdown 500 ft from end of runway that we might have struck the tail. No wide-bodied aircraft should be allowed to hold for takeoff on that taxiway due to above clearance problems not to mention the jet blast we encountered at a critical phase of flight. Jet blast could be a problem from an large transport for a small turbo-propeller landing on 25R, also. I will not accept a visual approach to that complex or anywhere else unless I have better visibility.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GND CONFLICT BTWN ACR WDB ON LNDG APCH AND ACR WDB HOLDING BTWN PARALLEL RWYS.
Narrative: ON FINAL APCH INTO LAX 25R AT DUSK, A WDB Y HOLDING ON TAXIWAY 8 FACING S WAS NARROWLY MISSED BY OUR L WING TIP (WDB X) DUE TO TIP OF WDB Y JUST BARELY CLR OF L SIDE OF OUR RWY. VISUAL APCHS WERE BEING CONDUCTED TO ALL 4 RWYS, BUT WE COULDN'T SEE OUR RWY UNTIL ABOUT 3 MI OUT. WE WERE FOLLOWING A WDB Z ON ILS VISUAL TO 25L ABOUT 1 MI IN FRONT OF US. THE WDB Y WASN'T NOTICED UNTIL WE WERE ABOUT OVER THE APCH END DUE TO LOW VISIBILITY. I LIFTED OUR L WING AND HELD ABOUT 100 FT ALT ABOVE GND UNTIL PAST THE WDB AND THEN LANDED NORMALLY. IT WAS OUR CONCLUSION THAT HAD I CONTINUED ON CENTERLINE TO A NORMAL TOUCHDOWN 500 FT FROM END OF RWY THAT WE MIGHT HAVE STRUCK THE TAIL. NO WIDE-BODIED ACFT SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO HOLD FOR TKOF ON THAT TAXIWAY DUE TO ABOVE CLRNC PROBLEMS NOT TO MENTION THE JET BLAST WE ENCOUNTERED AT A CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT. JET BLAST COULD BE A PROBLEM FROM AN LGT FOR A SMALL TURBO-PROP LNDG ON 25R, ALSO. I WILL NOT ACCEPT A VISUAL APCH TO THAT COMPLEX OR ANYWHERE ELSE UNLESS I HAVE BETTER VISIBILITY.
