Narrative:
Cleared for hornet departure. Misread SID to fly runway heading then intercept charlotte 189 radial. Problem: wording of SID could be clearer by stating, 'fly runway heading until given vector by ATC to intercept the 189 radial'. SID now reads: 'fly runway heading thence charlotte 189 radial'. Supplemental information from acn 184994: on a previous departure from charlotte, nc, we were issued a hornet 3 SID flying runway heading as instructed when the departure controller inquired if we were going to intercept the 189 degree radial to 'great' intersection. This was in absence of any previous vectoring instructions to do so.

Title: ACR MLT TRACK HDG DEV ON SID FROM CLT.
Narrative: CLRED FOR HORNET DEP. MISREAD SID TO FLY RWY HDG THEN INTERCEPT CHARLOTTE 189 RADIAL. PROBLEM: WORDING OF SID COULD BE CLEARER BY STATING, 'FLY RWY HDG UNTIL GIVEN VECTOR BY ATC TO INTERCEPT THE 189 RADIAL'. SID NOW READS: 'FLY RWY HDG THENCE CHARLOTTE 189 RADIAL'. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 184994: ON A PREVIOUS DEP FROM CHARLOTTE, NC, WE WERE ISSUED A HORNET 3 SID FLYING RWY HDG AS INSTRUCTED WHEN THE DEP CTLR INQUIRED IF WE WERE GOING TO INTERCEPT THE 189 DEG RADIAL TO 'GREAT' INTXN. THIS WAS IN ABSENCE OF ANY PREVIOUS VECTORING INSTRUCTIONS TO DO SO.
