Narrative:
Aircraft cruising 35000 ft at .75 mach. Heard a low pop, generator went off line, engine spooled down. We went through engine shutdown. Request ATC for immediate descent. We were cleared down to 29000 and later to 16000. We declared emergency going through 25000. Requested WX at sac and reno. Reno was high overcast. Requested vectors for reno circumnaving thunderstorm. Landed at reno without incident, deplaned passenger at gate. All checklists were performed and landing was normal. Reno was nearest suitable runway. Emergency evacuate/evacuation was briefed but not used. The entire event went smoothly and as planned. We were somewhat rushed due to some minor problems with pressurization and APU. ATC and reno tower handled us extremely well. We contacted our maintenance and dispatch after landing due to activities en route to landing. Our flight attendants performed very professionally.
