Narrative:

Immediately after level off at 17000 ice started forming. Within 30 seconds we requested an altitude change due to icing. After our request ATC told us to switch frequencys and make request there which we did. Between the switching of frequencys and receiving the altitude change we lost approximately 400 ft due to ice and slow airspeed. The whole thing took between 60 and 180 seconds. ATC gave us a current altimeter setting which brought us up approximately 100 ft and we flew out of the conditions allowing us to climb, so we were immediately back up to FL170. These conditions of icing were moderate to severe, and unforecast.
