Narrative:
St louis approach cleared us to 7000 ft from 10000 on modoc arrival. We received this message from TCASII 'traffic, traffic'. It showed traffic moving from 1 O'clock to 11 O'clock below us. 'Climb crossing climb'. We could not get visual contact with the intruder, so we began a climb. The TCASII called 'clear of conflict' at about 10400 ft. We advised ATC as we climbed on TCASII RA. He instructed us after 'clear of conflict' to maintain 10000 ft. As we descended to 10000 we received another TCASII alert 'traffic, traffic...descend crossing descend'. We got visual contact with the intruder at 10200. It was at 10000 crossing right to left at approximately 3 mi. We maintained visual. We asked ATC about the traffic. He confirmed 'at 10000, 11 O'clock'. We descended to 10000.
