Narrative:
Aircraft recently overhauled. Preflight inspection of fuel in tanks and indications were believed to be sufficient for short flight. Aircraft suffered fuel starvation approximately 7 mi short of destination. Safe landing, uneventful, executed on rural paved road and rollout to driveway. Subsequent refueling and departure were uneventful. Gauge indications in tanks have since been recalibrated (left tank indicated 1/8 at starvation). Chain of events: human performance considerations - improper preflight. Sun at back made tanks appear to be fuller than they actually were. Gauges out of calibration. Mixture was leaned properly for entire flight. No fuel management en route.

Title: RNS OUT OF GAS, LANDS ON ROAD.
Narrative: ACFT RECENTLY OVERHAULED. PREFLT INSPECTION OF FUEL IN TANKS AND INDICATIONS WERE BELIEVED TO BE SUFFICIENT FOR SHORT FLT. ACFT SUFFERED FUEL STARVATION APPROX 7 MI SHORT OF DEST. SAFE LNDG, UNEVENTFUL, EXECUTED ON RURAL PAVED ROAD AND ROLLOUT TO DRIVEWAY. SUBSEQUENT REFUELING AND DEP WERE UNEVENTFUL. GAUGE INDICATIONS IN TANKS HAVE SINCE BEEN RECALIBRATED (L TANK INDICATED 1/8 AT STARVATION). CHAIN OF EVENTS: HUMAN PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS - IMPROPER PREFLT. SUN AT BACK MADE TANKS APPEAR TO BE FULLER THAN THEY ACTUALLY WERE. GAUGES OUT OF CALIBRATION. MIXTURE WAS LEANED PROPERLY FOR ENTIRE FLT. NO FUEL MGMNT ENRTE.
