Narrative:
Approaching dfw at 11000 ATC called out traffic at 12 O'clock climbing to level at 10000 ft. We received a TA followed by an RA on the TCASII. We followed the TCASII and climbed to 11500 until clear of the RA and advised ATC, then returned to 11000 ft and was given a descent to 6000 ft. ATC advised us that we did not need to change altitude because the aircraft was to level at 10000 ft. We changed altitude as per our TCASII procedure. In the jumpseat was an ATC controller from den center who also witnessed the event. The #1 flight attendant said that from the cabin he saw what appeared to be an air carrier medium large transport Y at about 1000 ft away and to our right.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG ALTDEV EXCURSION FROM CLRNC ALT IN RESPONSE TO TCASII RA.
Narrative: APCHING DFW AT 11000 ATC CALLED OUT TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK CLBING TO LEVEL AT 10000 FT. WE RECEIVED A TA FOLLOWED BY AN RA ON THE TCASII. WE FOLLOWED THE TCASII AND CLBED TO 11500 UNTIL CLR OF THE RA AND ADVISED ATC, THEN RETURNED TO 11000 FT AND WAS GIVEN A DSCNT TO 6000 FT. ATC ADVISED US THAT WE DID NOT NEED TO CHANGE ALT BECAUSE THE ACFT WAS TO LEVEL AT 10000 FT. WE CHANGED ALT AS PER OUR TCASII PROC. IN THE JUMPSEAT WAS AN ATC CTLR FROM DEN CENTER WHO ALSO WITNESSED THE EVENT. THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT SAID THAT FROM THE CABIN HE SAW WHAT APPEARED TO BE AN ACR MLG Y AT ABOUT 1000 FT AWAY AND TO OUR R.
