Narrative:
In VFR conditions we were cleared from 11000 ft to 5000 ft. Approaching 8000 ft at 1500 FPM descent rate, approach reported traffic at our 1 O'clock position and about 2 mi at 7500 ft heading our direction. About same time TCASII gave a TA and graphically gave position and showed it to be approximately 600 ft below. A couple seconds later the first officer and I both got a visual on the traffic (low wing, single engine, small aircraft type) about the same time TCASII gave an RA telling us to climb. Stopped descent at about 7600 ft and climbed to 7800 ft. Other aircraft saw us about same time we started climb and he initiated a hard left turn to pass behind us. TCASII gave us the correct evasive maneuver quicker than we would have by making visual contact then studying the situation to determine what needed to be done. 'TCASII works!'

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR-MLG GA-SMA 25 NW OF PHL.
Narrative: IN VFR CONDITIONS WE WERE CLRED FROM 11000 FT TO 5000 FT. APCHING 8000 FT AT 1500 FPM DSCNT RATE, APCH RPTED TFC AT OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS AND ABOUT 2 MI AT 7500 FT HDG OUR DIRECTION. ABOUT SAME TIME TCASII GAVE A TA AND GRAPHICALLY GAVE POS AND SHOWED IT TO BE APPROX 600 FT BELOW. A COUPLE SECONDS LATER THE FO AND I BOTH GOT A VISUAL ON THE TFC (LOW WING, SINGLE ENG, SMA TYPE) ABOUT THE SAME TIME TCASII GAVE AN RA TELLING US TO CLB. STOPPED DSCNT AT ABOUT 7600 FT AND CLBED TO 7800 FT. OTHER ACFT SAW US ABOUT SAME TIME WE STARTED CLB AND HE INITIATED A HARD L TURN TO PASS BEHIND US. TCASII GAVE US THE CORRECT EVASIVE MANEUVER QUICKER THAN WE WOULD HAVE BY MAKING VISUAL CONTACT THEN STUDYING THE SITUATION TO DETERMINE WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. 'TCASII WORKS!'
