Narrative:
Over smo VORTAC, we were cleared the stadium visual 24R. We acknowledged and proceeded via the depicted ground track. On the base turn, approach sent us over to tower for the north complex. As I dialed in tower frequency, I also changed the first officer's NAVAID from smo to ilax for 24R. I then looked up, saw the hollywood park racetrack (a visual turn point) then looked out to check for traffic from our left (the east). The first officer started to call for flaps and gear and checklist. We finished configuring and I called tower as we rolled out on centerline for the right hand runway. Tower immediately responded by telling us we were lined up for 25R, when we had been cleared for 24R. And of course, they were right! We corrected back to 24R and landed. I simply allowed myself to get too busy inside and forgot about the elephants! The first officer and I debriefed the incident in the chocks, so I think we both learned a valuable lesson. All the square filling won't do you any good if you don't pay attention to the fundamentals. I did a poor job of backing the first officer up. My mistake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF MLG ON STADIUM VISUAL TO LAX CLRED 24R ALIGNED WITH 25R.
Narrative: OVER SMO VORTAC, WE WERE CLRED THE STADIUM VISUAL 24R. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND PROCEEDED VIA THE DEPICTED GND TRACK. ON THE BASE TURN, APCH SENT US OVER TO TWR FOR THE N COMPLEX. AS I DIALED IN TWR FREQ, I ALSO CHANGED THE F/O'S NAVAID FROM SMO TO ILAX FOR 24R. I THEN LOOKED UP, SAW THE HOLLYWOOD PARK RACETRACK (A VISUAL TURN POINT) THEN LOOKED OUT TO CHK FOR TFC FROM OUR L (THE E). THE FO STARTED TO CALL FOR FLAPS AND GEAR AND CHKLIST. WE FINISHED CONFIGURING AND I CALLED TWR AS WE ROLLED OUT ON CENTERLINE FOR THE R HAND RWY. TWR IMMEDIATELY RESPONDED BY TELLING US WE WERE LINED UP FOR 25R, WHEN WE HAD BEEN CLRED FOR 24R. AND OF COURSE, THEY WERE RIGHT! WE CORRECTED BACK TO 24R AND LANDED. I SIMPLY ALLOWED MYSELF TO GET TOO BUSY INSIDE AND FORGOT ABOUT THE ELEPHANTS! THE FO AND I DEBRIEFED THE INCIDENT IN THE CHOCKS, SO I THINK WE BOTH LEARNED A VALUABLE LESSON. ALL THE SQUARE FILLING WON'T DO YOU ANY GOOD IF YOU DON'T PAY ATTN TO THE FUNDAMENTALS. I DID A POOR JOB OF BACKING THE FO UP. MY MISTAKE.
