Narrative:

The captain was taxiing. We were repositioning an aircraft from the company hangar to a gate. I remember hearing the following instructions, 'go east on hangar alley, take the scenic to the old scenic and hold short of 9L.' then as we approached 9L we received further instructions, 'cross 9L to the jog to the outer.' once we crossed 9L we could see that it was impossible to get to the jog. In addition we were now stuck on a very short segment of the old scenic between 9L and 22R. The segment is so short that we would have interfered with both runways had we stayed there. In the confusion we crossed 22R to get to the outer. The runway was clear and no other planes were on it at the time, but it was an active runway. The controller questioned us after about 30 seconds. He said, 'I wanted you to take the jog to the outer, you have crossed an active runway.' we explained our dilemma. Apparently he had not intended that we use the old scenic, but that we continue on the scenic, cross 9L, new scenic, job, outer. As the reader can see by now, all these creative and similar names are confusing. Either the controller gave an impossible clearance, or we misunderstood him. If he actually said, 'take the scenic to the new scenic and hold short of 9L', it is still confusing because the label 'new scenic' doesn't appear on the airport diagram until the other side (south) of 9L. There are many nonstandard, creative names for taxiways at this particular airport. It is confusing for all.

Title: LTT REPOSITIONING ACFT FROM HANGAR TO GATE. CONFUSION REF TAXI CLRNC, CROSSES ACTIVE RWY.

Narrative: THE CAPT WAS TAXIING. WE WERE REPOSITIONING AN ACFT FROM THE COMPANY HANGAR TO A GATE. I REMEMBER HEARING THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS, 'GO E ON HANGAR ALLEY, TAKE THE SCENIC TO THE OLD SCENIC AND HOLD SHORT OF 9L.' THEN AS WE APCHED 9L WE RECEIVED FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS, 'CROSS 9L TO THE JOG TO THE OUTER.' ONCE WE CROSSED 9L WE COULD SEE THAT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET TO THE JOG. IN ADDITION WE WERE NOW STUCK ON A VERY SHORT SEGMENT OF THE OLD SCENIC BTWN 9L AND 22R. THE SEGMENT IS SO SHORT THAT WE WOULD HAVE INTERFERED WITH BOTH RWYS HAD WE STAYED THERE. IN THE CONFUSION WE CROSSED 22R TO GET TO THE OUTER. THE RWY WAS CLR AND NO OTHER PLANES WERE ON IT AT THE TIME, BUT IT WAS AN ACTIVE RWY. THE CTLR QUESTIONED US AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS. HE SAID, 'I WANTED YOU TO TAKE THE JOG TO THE OUTER, YOU HAVE CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY.' WE EXPLAINED OUR DILEMMA. EITHER THE CTLR GAVE AN IMPOSSIBLE CLRNC, OR WE MISUNDERSTOOD HIM. IF HE ACTUALLY SAID, 'TAKE THE SCENIC TO THE NEW SCENIC AND HOLD SHORT OF 9L', IT IS STILL CONFUSING BECAUSE THE LABEL 'NEW SCENIC' DOESN'T APPEAR ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM UNTIL THE OTHER SIDE (S) OF 9L. THERE ARE MANY NONSTANDARD, CREATIVE NAMES FOR TAXIWAYS AT THIS PARTICULAR ARPT. IT IS CONFUSING FOR ALL.
