Narrative:
When he offered me the opportunity of flying his airplane, I accepted eagerly. I knew the airplane would be a pleasure to fly, and that I would have no problem with it. I also knew that all the required inspections and airworthiness directives had undoubtedly been complied with. On nov/xx/91 I began the trip. Due to a WX delay, I spent an extra night (nov/xy/91 in muscle shoals (MSL), al). Then I completed the flight to pgd on nov/xz/91. On that same day, out of curiosity, I recovered the airplane's logbooks and took them home to review the history of this 42 yr old airplane. That evening, as I perused the logbooks, I was appalled to discover that the annual inspection was due in oct/91 and that it had not been accomplished! I had flown an airplane for almost 14 hours in violation of the FARS! Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: mechanic did inspection to bring logbook up to date and said nothing about the aircraft having been flown. Looks like I dodged the bullet.

I HAD FLOWN AN AIRPLANE FOR ALMOST 14 HRS IN VIOLATION OF THE FARS! CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: MECH DID INSPECTION TO BRING LOGBOOK UP TO DATE AND SAID NOTHING ABOUT THE ACFT HAVING BEEN FLOWN. LOOKS LIKE I DODGED THE BULLET.
