Narrative:
Several mi east of pensacola airport heading 180 degrees descending to 1700 ft with expectation of clearance to visual approach upon breaking out of WX at 2000 ft. We called 'airport in sight' to approach control and believe we heard 'cleared for visual approach to runway 35 contact tower'. Upon contacting tower, we were told we weren't cleared for the visual approach. We apologized and went back to approach control. Approach control did not respond to our call so we went back to tower. Tower cleared us to land. There were no conflicts, no aircraft in area or on final as I recall. This was our third flight segment of the day and about 5 hours into our duty day. I believe this situation was the result of a missed communication/misunderstanding during a busy critical phase of flight.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG UNDERSTOOD CLRED FOR VISUAL. CHANGED TO TWR BUT TWR ADVISED APCH CTLR HAD NOT CLRED FOR THE VISUAL.
Narrative: SEVERAL MI E OF PENSACOLA ARPT HDG 180 DEGS DSNDING TO 1700 FT WITH EXPECTATION OF CLRNC TO VISUAL APCH UPON BREAKING OUT OF WX AT 2000 FT. WE CALLED 'ARPT IN SIGHT' TO APCH CTL AND BELIEVE WE HEARD 'CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH TO RWY 35 CONTACT TWR'. UPON CONTACTING TWR, WE WERE TOLD WE WEREN'T CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH. WE APOLOGIZED AND WENT BACK TO APCH CTL. APCH CTL DID NOT RESPOND TO OUR CALL SO WE WENT BACK TO TWR. TWR CLRED US TO LAND. THERE WERE NO CONFLICTS, NO ACFT IN AREA OR ON FINAL AS I RECALL. THIS WAS OUR THIRD FLT SEGMENT OF THE DAY AND ABOUT 5 HRS INTO OUR DUTY DAY. I BELIEVE THIS SITUATION WAS THE RESULT OF A MISSED COM/MISUNDERSTANDING DURING A BUSY CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT.
