Narrative:
While in traffic pattern for 21L at dtw, approach control cleared us for visual to follow an aircraft ahead. We accepted clearance. While on 45 degree to final to intercept localizer final approach course, I (copilot) noticed lights at 9 O'clock. I recognized these as a commuter or similar type high wing commuter on a collision course to us. A pullup and climb of 1500 ft was initiated to avoid impact. The commuter pilot confirmed that he did not see us. He was following the wrong aircraft behind us (supposed to follow us) and cut us off in traffic pattern. Approach controller had an alert and didn't notify us.
