Narrative:
My tcad suddenly alerted me to a plane 1.5 mi away and 500 ft below me climbing an converging. When the other plane was 300 ft beneath me and less than a mi, I began an abrupt climb. Despite the steepness of the climb, the tcad continued to show the plane 300 ft beneath. It wasn't until 6700 ft MSL that the altitude and distance started diverging. I leveled off and told ATC that I had deviated and was returning to 6000 ft. They commented that they had shown me at 7000 ft at the top of the abrupt climb, but they could not identify what traffic I was avoiding. They said there had been a plane behind me. I said 'that must have been him' although now I am not so sure. I never made visual contact with the plane. The system worked well in this case. As PIC I took corrective action based on advanced equipment in the cockpit. ATC was informed and, in turn, was very cooperative. We'll never know if this was a near miss or 'just one of those things'.
