Narrative:
Clearing runways 36 at taxiway 29 cleared to taxi. Asked ground inner or outer? In responding inadvertently taxied on 36 which is poorly marked and looks like an inner taxiway. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter clarified that they had landed on runway 13R and turned off on high speed to taxiway B, then got on taxiway 29, held short of 18R, then were cleared across the right to hold short of 18L, then got cleared to cross, cleared to the gate. Says neither he nor PIC were aware of runway 18/36 and thought that was the 'inner taxiway.' when they made left turn onto inner they saw small aircraft aircraft Y landing in a head on situation on 18. PIC expedited taxi to next turnoff and aircraft Y landed ok. ATC apparently did not notice the incident and nothing was said on the air by anyone involved. Reporter says taxiing at dfw is always confusing. Signs marking taxiways are placed so that it is difficult to tell which taxiway goes with which sign. Vernacular of taxiway designation is also confusing with numbers, letters, and combinations of both being used.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTHORIZED RWY ENTRY BY ACR. UNCOORD RWY ENTRY.
Narrative: CLRING RWYS 36 AT TAXIWAY 29 CLRED TO TAXI. ASKED GND INNER OR OUTER? IN RESPONDING INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ON 36 WHICH IS POORLY MARKED AND LOOKS LIKE AN INNER TAXIWAY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR CLARIFIED THAT THEY HAD LANDED ON RWY 13R AND TURNED OFF ON HIGH SPD TO TAXIWAY B, THEN GOT ON TAXIWAY 29, HELD SHORT OF 18R, THEN WERE CLRED ACROSS THE R TO HOLD SHORT OF 18L, THEN GOT CLRED TO CROSS, CLRED TO THE GATE. SAYS NEITHER HE NOR PIC WERE AWARE OF RWY 18/36 AND THOUGHT THAT WAS THE 'INNER TAXIWAY.' WHEN THEY MADE L TURN ONTO INNER THEY SAW SMA ACFT Y LNDG IN A HEAD ON SITUATION ON 18. PIC EXPEDITED TAXI TO NEXT TURNOFF AND ACFT Y LANDED OK. ATC APPARENTLY DID NOT NOTICE THE INCIDENT AND NOTHING WAS SAID ON THE AIR BY ANYONE INVOLVED. RPTR SAYS TAXIING AT DFW IS ALWAYS CONFUSING.
