Narrative:
Given ramp inspection by FAA inspector while on ground at mci. Informed by inspector that decals on outside of forward galley door were missing. Given no indication that the missing decals were a grounding or safety of flight item, I proceeded to operate the aircraft and flight on schedule. I did talk to our maintenance people concerning this problem before I departed, and I was told that the decals would be replaced at the next maintenance stop or ron. The company was aware of the problem. I believe that the FAA could have been more specific in the requirements of which decals are necessary in order to continue the flight. If I had known that the missing decals were required items then I certainly would not have knowingly operated the aircraft without replacements.
