Narrative:

I was vectoring air carrier X for ILS 13R at dal. Traffic was light. I had air carrier X on a 250 degree heading at 2000 ft (base leg), 4-5 mi east of final. I was to begin providing OJT. As my trainee plugged in, I briefed him on the operation and explained an IFR release at an uncontrolled airport. I had momentarily been distraction and allowed air carrier X to go too far west. Air carrier X called my attention by asking if he should turn. He was converging with air carrier Y traffic 3 mi away at his altitude that was on the runway 17R ILS to dfw. I gave an immediate climb to 3000 ft and an immediate left turn to 110 to avoid the traffic. If air carrier X had not called my attention, it would have been too late for action. A better plan would have been to leave air carrier X at 3000 until turning sbound to parallel the dfw final and prevent the possibility of this situation occurring.

Narrative: I WAS VECTORING ACR X FOR ILS 13R AT DAL. TFC WAS LIGHT. I HAD ACR X ON A 250 DEG HDG AT 2000 FT (BASE LEG), 4-5 MI E OF FINAL. I WAS TO BEGIN PROVIDING OJT. AS MY TRAINEE PLUGGED IN, I BRIEFED HIM ON THE OP AND EXPLAINED AN IFR RELEASE AT AN UNCTLED ARPT. I HAD MOMENTARILY BEEN DISTR AND ALLOWED ACR X TO GO TOO FAR W. ACR X CALLED MY ATTN BY ASKING IF HE SHOULD TURN. HE WAS CONVERGING WITH ACR Y TFC 3 MI AWAY AT HIS ALT THAT WAS ON THE RWY 17R ILS TO DFW. I GAVE AN IMMEDIATE CLB TO 3000 FT AND AN IMMEDIATE L TURN TO 110 TO AVOID THE TFC. IF ACR X HAD NOT CALLED MY ATTN, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO LATE FOR ACTION. A BETTER PLAN WOULD HAVE BEEN TO LEAVE ACR X AT 3000 UNTIL TURNING SBOUND TO PARALLEL THE DFW FINAL AND PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS SITUATION OCCURRING.
