Narrative:
We were flight on a 'dog-leg' to final to runway 27 (mem) at approximately 3000 ft MSL and approximately 10 NM. We were cleared for the visual approach to runway 27 by mem approach control and then switched to tower frequency. Tower notified us of traffic to the left of oru position at approximately 2000. (Approach control stated earlier that it was military spc which was never switched to tower frequency). The check-in with tower occurred simultaneously as the 'traffic' passed underneath and to the right of us (see depiction). As we turned 'final' to runway 27, the 'traffic' was now low and to the right of us. It then proceeded to do a 'climbing left turn' passing in front and above us, as we simultaneously (in the interest of safety) executed an evasive maneuver, by increasing our 'right turn angle of bank' and 'pushing the yolk over' (to execute a greater descent). We estimate that the 'traffic' was an 'spc military' and that it passed less than 500 ft from us. We then corrected our centerline alignment and GS and continued to an uneventful landing. The 'traffic' continued on a southerly course.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC.
Narrative: WE WERE FLT ON A 'DOG-LEG' TO FINAL TO RWY 27 (MEM) AT APPROX 3000 FT MSL AND APPROX 10 NM. WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 27 BY MEM APCH CTL AND THEN SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ. TWR NOTIFIED US OF TFC TO THE L OF ORU POS AT APPROX 2000. (APCH CTL STATED EARLIER THAT IT WAS MIL SPC WHICH WAS NEVER SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ). THE CHK-IN WITH TWR OCCURRED SIMULTANEOUSLY AS THE 'TFC' PASSED UNDERNEATH AND TO THE R OF US (SEE DEPICTION). AS WE TURNED 'FINAL' TO RWY 27, THE 'TFC' WAS NOW LOW AND TO THE R OF US. IT THEN PROCEEDED TO DO A 'CLBING L TURN' PASSING IN FRONT AND ABOVE US, AS WE SIMULTANEOUSLY (IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY) EXECUTED AN EVASIVE MANEUVER, BY INCREASING OUR 'R TURN ANGLE OF BANK' AND 'PUSHING THE YOLK OVER' (TO EXECUTE A GREATER DSCNT). WE ESTIMATE THAT THE 'TFC' WAS AN 'SPC MIL' AND THAT IT PASSED LESS THAN 500 FT FROM US. WE THEN CORRECTED OUR CTRLINE ALIGNMENT AND GS AND CONTINUED TO AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. THE 'TFC' CONTINUED ON A SOUTHERLY COURSE.
