Narrative:
On wed/march at clt everything was routine through engine start and taxi. We were told to taxi to runway 36L by 'M' hold short of 'east.' at east we were told to taxi to runway 36L. We were about #3 in line when we arrived at the end of 36L. When we were next to go at the end of 36L about pm:45 a transmission was made by tower which sounded like 'air carrier axy expedite going into position and hold on 36L.' the copilot repeated back to tower 'air carrier axy into position and hold 36L.' upon crossing the hold line tower gave a commuter clearance for takeoff from the intersection just short of the end taxiway on 36L. The commuters call sign ended in xy. At this point I felt the tower did not intend for us to be over the hold line. I stopped short of the runway because I felt there was confusion on who was cleared into position. I told tower I was over the hold line and they sent the aircraft on final around. We were cleared into position and a normal takeoff made when cleared by tower. Hold short lights should help stop these missed communication.
