Narrative:
Overfly of small aircraft midfield lga tower control. Medium large transport departing runway 31 lga. During turn to 340 degrees, observed small aircraft pass overhead approximately 200 ft left side 50 ft. Observation took place during frequency change to departure. We were not advised by tower of light aircraft traffic. There was 20 KT headwind, we were light and climbed at a greater than normal angle. I feel that this was a factor in the conflict. If the NOTAMS or publications could note the overhead traffic possibilities, future conflicts and possible tragedies can be avoided. This was not a near miss, but could have been tragic, had we not made the turn to 340 degrees.
