Narrative:
IFR flight plan from lns to hpn. After avp VOR we were cleared direct valre -- valre 1 arrival. 20 mi from valre, hpn airport closed. We were told by ny approach to descend and maintain 6000 ft hold at valre as published, 10 mi legs. We were outbound from valre in the first hold on dpk 338 radial when approach asked what we were holding on. Explained the dpk 338 degree radial and 47 mi. Approach told us it should be the kingston 203 degree radial and 14 DME. We were then given vectors and proceeded to the airport. A telephone call later in the day and an investigation shows the valre 1 STAR to be incorrect. The correct hold is on the ign 203 degree radial 14 mi. This shows the need for good crew coordination in double checking and comparing charts and when in doubt, asking the controller. Published charts are not always correct. Beware.
