Narrative:
After takeoff #1 leading edge slat failed to retract. Flaps were cycled back to 2 degrees and up with same result. The 'leading edge device fails to retract' checklist was complied with and the decision was made to land overweight at phx. The landing was uneventful.

Title: ACFT EQUIP PROBLEM MANDATES A RETURN LAND SITUATION.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF #1 LEADING EDGE SLAT FAILED TO RETRACT. FLAPS WERE CYCLED BACK TO 2 DEGS AND UP WITH SAME RESULT. THE 'LEADING EDGE DEVICE FAILS TO RETRACT' CHKLIST WAS COMPLIED WITH AND THE DECISION WAS MADE TO LAND OVERWT AT PHX. THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL.
