Narrative:

I was approximately 3000 ft MSL north of front royal airport when the planes engine began to run rough, and sputter. I tried the primer, carburetor heat, fuel mixtures mags. It became evident that because of the northwest winds (14-20) KTS that I was not going to make it to the airport and executed emergency procedures to land in the only field available to me. There is very little open on the northeast side of front royal. There was an old rusty barb wire fence hidden in the high grass, I believe that when the plane caught the fence it caused the plane to turn over.
