Narrative:
While working inbound final at ewr approach I took a handoff at 6000 ft west of mmu 8 to 10 mi. The aircraft was air carrier X, inbound ewr. A departure off runway 29 ewr, air carrier Y, was level at 6000 ft nwbound and came within 1 mi of the air carrier X. I descended air carrier X to 5000 immediately on noticing the situation, but loss of legal separation had occurred already.

Title: ACR Y CLB TO OCCUPIED ALT HAD LTSS FROM ACR X. SYS ERROR.
Narrative: WHILE WORKING INBOUND FINAL AT EWR APCH I TOOK A HDOF AT 6000 FT W OF MMU 8 TO 10 MI. THE ACFT WAS ACR X, INBOUND EWR. A DEP OFF RWY 29 EWR, ACR Y, WAS LEVEL AT 6000 FT NWBOUND AND CAME WITHIN 1 MI OF THE ACR X. I DSNDED ACR X TO 5000 IMMEDIATELY ON NOTICING THE SITUATION, BUT LOSS OF LEGAL SEPARATION HAD OCCURRED ALREADY.
