Narrative:
Flight slc-mso aug/fri/92. Terrain closure on visual approach at night. On descent into mso, after breaking off the VOR DME B inside stevi approach at 8100 ft and field in sight, the runway was changed to runway 11 from 29 at the last min. I turned downwind at 290 and started gradual descent to position for landing. 'Whoop whoop pull up' and terrain started off. I immediately applied power and climbed to 9000 ft and proceeded to turn base, still with the field in sight, and landed uneventfully. After review, I was obviously farther away from the field than was thought, at 7-8 mi vice 2-3. We were VFR, but I should have requested the ILS to 11 after the runway change and not start descent before base.
