Narrative:
Aircraft was at hangar when I walked over to get aircraft maintenance personnel said aircraft was not ready. They didn't know that it was scheduled out at X20 pm. Aircraft had been grounded because of an automatic feather problem and a DME problem I asked what they were going to do. Mechanic said replace DME unit and MEL the automatic feather. Mechanic said he had run the aircraft and couldn't duplicate the problem and signed it off. I told the first officer to do the preflight and when maintenance had the aircraft ready for them to bring the aircraft to the gate. After takeoff the gear (nose gear) stayed down and locked. The tower verified this. I asked my first officer if he had verified the nose gear pin was pulled. He said he hadn't noticed any safety flags. I then called pkb maintenance to see if they had installed a nose gear pin. All 3 said no. I decided to continue the flight to pit because of their full time rescue vehicles. I landed at pit uneventfully. After deplaning the people, we found a pin installed with a flag. The flag was bare aluminum, no paint. Maintenance is now painting all flags red and yellow and installing longer chains.
