Narrative:
After landing on 21R, we were cleared by metropolitan tower (135.0) to turn left onto runway 9 and hold short of 'fox'. The captain began to turn onto victor and I repeated that tower said to turn onto runway 9 and the captain did so. He was taxiing very slowly and looking left and I reiterated that we were to hold short of 'fox' ahead. Then I said that I would check to see how far ahead it was. As I looked to my right and down to where my airport diagram was the captain said, 'I'm turning here.' I looked up and he had turned left onto 'wolf.' the captain told me to tell ground control (121.8) that we were on 'wolf.' I did and ground told us to do a hard 180 degree taxi back onto runway 9 and hold short of 'fox.' as we turned around the captain muttered that he hated taxiing on runways. Ground came on and told us to contact ground on 119.45. I understand that this captain may be adverse to taxi on a runway in the wake of recent accident where one of our fellow capts died as he landed on top of a commuter in lax, but as a professional, emotional reactions must be tempered by actual situations and common sense. In this situation the ATIS did report runway 9 closed. Numerous sections of taxiway, especially near 'wolf' -- at Y5 and Y6 -- were closed and construction was in progress at various points near there, and there were a number of other aircraft taxiing in the vicinity of 'wolf' and 'fox.' aside from slamming on the brakes after the turn onto 'wolf' had been made (since I had been looking down at the airport plan view when the turn was made), I feel there was nothing else I could have done to have prevented the captain from his inappropriate turn. Though I agree it is a captain's duty and responsibility to conduct a safe operation, and clearly by his comment, he felt 'unsafe' taxiing on runway 9, his decision was inappropriate and I disagree with it. I hope in the future this captain controls his 'reactions' and communicates his concerns to his first officer or/and to ATC.

ASIDE FROM SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES AFTER THE TURN ONTO 'WOLF' HAD BEEN MADE (SINCE I HAD BEEN LOOKING DOWN AT THE ARPT PLAN VIEW WHEN THE TURN WAS MADE), I FEEL THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE I COULD HAVE DONE TO HAVE PREVENTED THE CAPT FROM HIS INAPPROPRIATE TURN. THOUGH I AGREE IT IS A CAPT'S DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY TO CONDUCT A SAFE OP, AND CLRLY BY HIS COMMENT, HE FELT 'UNSAFE' TAXIING ON RWY 9, HIS DECISION WAS INAPPROPRIATE AND I DISAGREE WITH IT. I HOPE IN THE FUTURE THIS CAPT CTLS HIS 'REACTIONS' AND COMMUNICATES HIS CONCERNS TO HIS FO OR/AND TO ATC.
