Narrative:
We were descending from FL330 to 16000 on the jawbn 5 arrival victoria transition (yyj.JAWBN5) as the first officer I was flying the airplane. Seattle approach control cleared us to the jawbn intersection to hold northwest on the sea 307 degree radial using the VOR/localizer function of the autoplt and set up the heading marker so that when I engaged heading select mode, the aircraft would start a right turn to enter the holding pattern. There is a published holding pattern at jawbn intersection but it's on the southeast side of the intersection. At about 45 DME (jawbn is at 42 DME) the captain questioned my planned entry. I had confirmed the clearance with him when we received it but he thought I was wrong and an instructor pilot on the jump seat agreed with him. The captain told me to enter the published holding pattern and at 42 DME I made a left turn to accomplished that. Seattle approach control started issuing vectors to us which positioned us back on the northwest side of jawbn intersection but never indicated to us that we had made a right turn at jawbn intersection and not entered the published hold.

Title: FLC OF ACR MLG ACFT INADVERTENTLY STARTED ENTRY OF THE WRONG SIDE HOLDING PATTERN.
Narrative: WE WERE DSNDING FROM FL330 TO 16000 ON THE JAWBN 5 ARR VICTORIA TRANSITION (YYJ.JAWBN5) AS THE FO I WAS FLYING THE AIRPLANE. SEATTLE APCH CTL CLRED US TO THE JAWBN INTXN TO HOLD NW ON THE SEA 307 DEG RADIAL USING THE VOR/LOC FUNCTION OF THE AUTOPLT AND SET UP THE HDG MARKER SO THAT WHEN I ENGAGED HDG SELECT MODE, THE ACFT WOULD START A R TURN TO ENTER THE HOLDING PATTERN. THERE IS A PUBLISHED HOLDING PATTERN AT JAWBN INTXN BUT IT'S ON THE SE SIDE OF THE INTXN. AT ABOUT 45 DME (JAWBN IS AT 42 DME) THE CAPT QUESTIONED MY PLANNED ENTRY. I HAD CONFIRMED THE CLRNC WITH HIM WHEN WE RECEIVED IT BUT HE THOUGHT I WAS WRONG AND AN INSTRUCTOR PLT ON THE JUMP SEAT AGREED WITH HIM. THE CAPT TOLD ME TO ENTER THE PUBLISHED HOLDING PATTERN AND AT 42 DME I MADE A L TURN TO ACCOMPLISHED THAT. SEATTLE APCH CTL STARTED ISSUING VECTORS TO US WHICH POSITIONED US BACK ON THE NW SIDE OF JAWBN INTXN BUT NEVER INDICATED TO US THAT WE HAD MADE A R TURN AT JAWBN INTXN AND NOT ENTERED THE PUBLISHED HOLD.
