Narrative:
While at cruise altitude and airspeed, center gave us a 30 degree left turn for spacing into detroit. About 3 min later, the TCASII gave us 'traffic' and we spotted an air carrier widebody transport crossing our path right to left. At that time, center gave us a right turn back which took us nearly over the widebody transport aircraft. At no time did he call out the traffic. Shortly thereafter, we got 'climb, climb' from the TCASII even though we were obviously above and would remain above air carrier widebody transport. They were in cruise also. Symbology indicated that a 500 FPM climb was required. At the captain's direction we ignored the RA and after passing over air carrier widebody transport we got a 'clear of conflict.' this is the fourth RA I have experienced. All have been false. Something needs to be done to improve this system, especially in high traffic areas.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF ACR MLG ACFT RECEIVED WHAT APPEARED TO BE A FALSE WARNING FROM THEIR TCASII EQUIP.
Narrative: WHILE AT CRUISE ALT AND AIRSPD, CTR GAVE US A 30 DEG L TURN FOR SPACING INTO DETROIT. ABOUT 3 MIN LATER, THE TCASII GAVE US 'TFC' AND WE SPOTTED AN ACR WDB XING OUR PATH R TO L. AT THAT TIME, CTR GAVE US A R TURN BACK WHICH TOOK US NEARLY OVER THE WDB ACFT. AT NO TIME DID HE CALL OUT THE TFC. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE GOT 'CLB, CLB' FROM THE TCASII EVEN THOUGH WE WERE OBVIOUSLY ABOVE AND WOULD REMAIN ABOVE ACR WDB. THEY WERE IN CRUISE ALSO. SYMBOLOGY INDICATED THAT A 500 FPM CLB WAS REQUIRED. AT THE CAPT'S DIRECTION WE IGNORED THE RA AND AFTER PASSING OVER ACR WDB WE GOT A 'CLR OF CONFLICT.' THIS IS THE FOURTH RA I HAVE EXPERIENCED. ALL HAVE BEEN FALSE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO IMPROVE THIS SYS, ESPECIALLY IN HIGH TFC AREAS.
