Narrative:
While climbing out of FL220 en route to phx after departing ewr the #1 engine failed. We immediately declared an emergency and asked to return to ewr since we had departed only 12 mins earlier and the WX was VFR. We were on autoplt and I took manual control of aircraft as we completed our airline immediate and secondary action items for the engine failure. We landed 15 mins later after having briefed the cabin attendants and passengers. We made normal single engine approach and landing and taxied to the gate under our own power. Crew coordination was excellent and passengers were grateful to be appraised of the situation all along the way. We later learned from maintenance control that metal particles were found in the oil filter and the engine would have to be replaced. The engine never restarted and had no N2 compressor rotation.
