Narrative:
On oct xx we were late returning VFR from los angeles to san diego. My small aircraft XXX was #5 for a night landing at montgomery field. On a 3 mi final, the ghostly shadow of a high winged single, transitioning right to left in front of me was outlined by the runway lights. God, I thought someone has just flown through the final approach leg without a clearance. Next, the apparition reappeared even closer moving from left to right. Within seconds, the tower contacted me: 'south- turns to the right approved,' followed by 'small aircraft XXX go around' about 30 seconds later. A bit shaken I made an uneventful landing. Later that day a call to the tower revealed the sequence of events. There were 3 aircraft on final, an small aircraft X, an small aircraft xx, and my XXX. The small aircraft xx wrongly decided that he was too close to the small aircraft X and initiated a series of wide s-turns without approval from the tower! That was the high winged ghost in front of me.

Narrative: ON OCT XX WE WERE LATE RETURNING VFR FROM LOS ANGELES TO SAN DIEGO. MY SMA XXX WAS #5 FOR A NIGHT LNDG AT MONTGOMERY FIELD. ON A 3 MI FINAL, THE GHOSTLY SHADOW OF A HIGH WINGED SINGLE, TRANSITIONING R TO L IN FRONT OF ME WAS OUTLINED BY THE RWY LIGHTS. GOD, I THOUGHT SOMEONE HAS JUST FLOWN THROUGH THE FINAL APCH LEG WITHOUT A CLRNC. NEXT, THE APPARITION REAPPEARED EVEN CLOSER MOVING FROM L TO R. WITHIN SECONDS, THE TWR CONTACTED ME: 'S- TURNS TO THE R APPROVED,' FOLLOWED BY 'SMA XXX GAR' ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER. A BIT SHAKEN I MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. LATER THAT DAY A CALL TO THE TWR REVEALED THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS. THERE WERE 3 ACFT ON FINAL, AN SMA X, AN SMA XX, AND MY XXX.
