Narrative:
Security area at concourse stapleton appeared to be understaffed. I went through the security without my uniform hat on (large metal insignia). My money clip, keys, watch, etc, all were in my hat. There was no one available to inspect hand items and the walk through was open. After laying the hat along side the walk through, I picked it up inside the secure area. I picked up my bag that had gone through the x-ray machine and started on to my duty station. Finally one of the security guards called out to me to inspect my hat. There were several passenger that went through this area without a security guard checking the walk through.
