Narrative:
Climb to and level off at FL230. Approximately 1 min later, controller asked our altitude. When we replied FL230, he responded the clearance was to FL220. He also stated we read back FL220. This both I and my first officer disputed, although the first officer speaks very softly. I might have missed his readback, and the controller might have. To our query as to whether we should descend, he said no. About 2 mins later we were given FL240. Later phone call we were told 'no problem,' separation 6 mi. Supervisor said it would go no further.
