Narrative:

After starting the APU on the ground, cabin smoke developed. APU was shut down and maintenance called. APU was placarded inoperative. The plane was released for flight. After takeoff during climb out a flight attendant notified there was smoke in the cabin. I leveled off at 5000 ft and ATC was notified of the problem. Requested to come back to sfo for landing immediately. During descent, after the packs had been turned off, flight attendant advised that smoke was clearing. We proceeded to land without any problem. The landing checklist was completed normally. After clearing the active runway the flight attendant advised there was no smoke left and no need to evacuate/evacuation the airplane. We went to the gate and deplaned the passenger without further incident. At no point during the incident was there any smoke or odor in the cockpit. ATC vectored us back to the final approach quickly. We were on the ground in 2-3 mins. The smoke was minimal and dissipated quickly. An emergency was not declared.
