Narrative:
On the approach to ind the ATIS was reported snow and ice on all runways. Runway 5L was closed. We were vectored to final approach to ILS runway 5R. We called tower and reported on final to runway 5R. The tower questioned us about runway 5R. They thought we were on final for runway 5L. They did clear us to land on runway 5R. They did immediately ask the trucks plowing the runway to runway 5R whether they were clear of the runway (we were below 500 ft and still in the clouds). They did confirm that they were clear of runway. We were lucky to call in on final to runway 5R. I think there was some confusion on whether we were coming in on runway 5R or runway 5L between the local and the approach controller. I do now think that we intercepted the wrong runway (runway 5R) when we were assigned runway 5L. The approach controller would have said something to us, although we did come from the north and went across both runway 5L and runway 5R before we were turned back to intercept the runway 5R localizer course.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: APCH TO WRONG RWY.
Narrative: ON THE APCH TO IND THE ATIS WAS RPTED SNOW AND ICE ON ALL RWYS. RWY 5L WAS CLOSED. WE WERE VECTORED TO FINAL APCH TO ILS RWY 5R. WE CALLED TWR AND RPTED ON FINAL TO RWY 5R. THE TWR QUESTIONED US ABOUT RWY 5R. THEY THOUGHT WE WERE ON FINAL FOR RWY 5L. THEY DID CLR US TO LAND ON RWY 5R. THEY DID IMMEDIATELY ASK THE TRUCKS PLOWING THE RWY TO RWY 5R WHETHER THEY WERE CLR OF THE RWY (WE WERE BELOW 500 FT AND STILL IN THE CLOUDS). THEY DID CONFIRM THAT THEY WERE CLR OF RWY. WE WERE LUCKY TO CALL IN ON FINAL TO RWY 5R. I THINK THERE WAS SOME CONFUSION ON WHETHER WE WERE COMING IN ON RWY 5R OR RWY 5L BTWN THE LCL AND THE APCH CTLR. I DO NOW THINK THAT WE INTERCEPTED THE WRONG RWY (RWY 5R) WHEN WE WERE ASSIGNED RWY 5L. THE APCH CTLR WOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING TO US, ALTHOUGH WE DID COME FROM THE N AND WENT ACROSS BOTH RWY 5L AND RWY 5R BEFORE WE WERE TURNED BACK TO INTERCEPT THE RWY 5R LOC COURSE.
