Narrative:
Our aircraft was level at 3000 ft MSL and cleared for approach. ATC advised traffic at 2 O'clock and 2500 ft. We were IMC and so advised ATC. TCASII picked up traffic at 3 O'clock and 400 ft. Traffic was climbing to minus 300 ft (TCASII) and maybe minus 200 ft when TCASII directed a 'climb' in excess of 1000 FPM. Our aircraft was at approximately 3600 ft MSL when we received a 'clear of conflict' from TCASII, and the climb was completed at 3800 ft MSL. Approach control was advised of the TCASII directed climb and they confirmed we were still cleared for the approach from that altitude. We descended to 3000 ft and completed a normal approach and landing. The captain contacted approach controller after landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF ACR LGT ACFT DEV FROM ASSIGNED APCH ALT IN RESPONDING TO A TCASII RA.
Narrative: OUR ACFT WAS LEVEL AT 3000 FT MSL AND CLRED FOR APCH. ATC ADVISED TFC AT 2 O'CLOCK AND 2500 FT. WE WERE IMC AND SO ADVISED ATC. TCASII PICKED UP TFC AT 3 O'CLOCK AND 400 FT. TFC WAS CLBING TO MINUS 300 FT (TCASII) AND MAYBE MINUS 200 FT WHEN TCASII DIRECTED A 'CLB' IN EXCESS OF 1000 FPM. OUR ACFT WAS AT APPROX 3600 FT MSL WHEN WE RECEIVED A 'CLR OF CONFLICT' FROM TCASII, AND THE CLB WAS COMPLETED AT 3800 FT MSL. APCH CTL WAS ADVISED OF THE TCASII DIRECTED CLB AND THEY CONFIRMED WE WERE STILL CLRED FOR THE APCH FROM THAT ALT. WE DSNDED TO 3000 FT AND COMPLETED A NORMAL APCH AND LNDG. THE CAPT CONTACTED APCH CTLR AFTER LNDG.
