Narrative:
Scheduled flight from slc to jac. Cancelled IFR 16 mi south of jac for VFR approach -- no reported traffic. Switched from slc center 133.25 to jac unicom 122.8 using #2 radio. Continued to use #1 radio to monitor center. Announced 'south of field 16 DME,' 'abeam middle field,' 'base to final,' and 'clear of runway jac.' no response on 122.8 by unicom or traffic. On rollout 18 noticed small single engine aircraft on close downwind for runway 18 -- opposite traffic for our approach. Later informed that unicom received none of our approach xmissions. I had assumed unicom was unmanned and there was no traffic in the airport area. Wrong assumption. Suspect either the radio was not completely tuned or 'crystals' in the radio had failed on that particular frequency. #2 radio operated normally during the flight on all other frequencys.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR ACFT MAKES APCH INTO UNCTLED ARPT MAKING POS RPTS IN PATTERN. NOT RECEIVED DUE FAULTY XMISSIONS.
Narrative: SCHEDULED FLT FROM SLC TO JAC. CANCELLED IFR 16 MI S OF JAC FOR VFR APCH -- NO RPTED TFC. SWITCHED FROM SLC CTR 133.25 TO JAC UNICOM 122.8 USING #2 RADIO. CONTINUED TO USE #1 RADIO TO MONITOR CTR. ANNOUNCED 'S OF FIELD 16 DME,' 'ABEAM MIDDLE FIELD,' 'BASE TO FINAL,' AND 'CLR OF RWY JAC.' NO RESPONSE ON 122.8 BY UNICOM OR TFC. ON ROLLOUT 18 NOTICED SMALL SINGLE ENG ACFT ON CLOSE DOWNWIND FOR RWY 18 -- OPPOSITE TFC FOR OUR APCH. LATER INFORMED THAT UNICOM RECEIVED NONE OF OUR APCH XMISSIONS. I HAD ASSUMED UNICOM WAS UNMANNED AND THERE WAS NO TFC IN THE ARPT AREA. WRONG ASSUMPTION. SUSPECT EITHER THE RADIO WAS NOT COMPLETELY TUNED OR 'CRYSTALS' IN THE RADIO HAD FAILED ON THAT PARTICULAR FREQ. #2 RADIO OPERATED NORMALLY DURING THE FLT ON ALL OTHER FREQS.
